Drive failed? First steps
Switch the computer off
If the system hangs or shows errors, cut the power straight away. Do not wait for the operating system to “sort itself out”.
Do not reconnect the drive
Every further attempt can damage the data more and make recovery harder.
Avoid “miracle” software
If the drive clicks, scrapes or makes unusual noises, defragmenters and recovery tools will only make things worse.
